Species and Records List

The species list (or records list, depending on the inventory type) is the core component of every inventory in Xolmis Mobile. It displays all species detected during the survey and provides tools to manage counts, add coordinates, edit notes, and organize your observations efficiently.

This section explains how to use the species list during fieldwork.

Adding a Species

  1. Open an inventory.
  2. Tap the Add species field at the top of the list.
  3. Type part of the scientific name. You may use:
  4. Initials of genus + species (e.g., peob or penobs → Penelope obscura)
  5. Partial matches (e.g., muscu → Troglodytes musculus)
  6. Multiple fragments separated by spaces (e.g., pen obs → Penelope obscura)
  7. Count + comma + species (e.g., 32,chrruf → Chrysomus ruficapillus x 32)
  8. Select the species from the suggestions.

If the species is added after the inventory is finished, it will be marked outside the sample.

If the species is already in the list:

  • If the inventory is a Detection Transect or Detection Point inventory, add a new species record.
  • If the inventory is a Transect Count or Point Count inventory, ask if you want to add to the count. If the count was entered in the search, add to the count without asking.
  • Other inventory types show a message and do not add anything.

Adding a Custom Species

If the species is not found:

  • Tap the icon on the right side of the search bar
  • Enter a temporary name

The custom name will appear exactly as typed, highlighted in red.

Adjusting the Number of Individuals

For quantitative methods (transects, point counts, banding, etc.):

  • Use the + and – buttons next to the species name.
  • Tap the number itself to enter large values manually.
  • Default count is 1 when adding a species.

Qualitative lists do not track individual counts.

Adding POIs (Points of Interest)

A POI stores the GPS coordinates of a species or detection.

To add a POI:

  1. Tap the GPS icon on the right side of the species entry.
  2. The app records the current device location.

To view or manage POIs:

  • Tap the species name to open the details screen.
  • Long‑press a POI to:
  • View details
  • Add notes
  • Delete the POI

POIs are included when exporting to KML.

Editing Species Details

Long‑press a species in the list to open the action menu:

  • Details – Add notes or change the species.
  • Remove from sample – Marks the species as recorded outside the sampling period.
  • Include in sample – Reverses the above.
  • Add POI – Records a new coordinate.
  • Delete – Removes the species and all associated POIs.

Species Inside vs. Outside the Sample

Species added after finishing an inventory are marked with gray background.

This distinction is important for:

  • Mackinnon lists
  • Accumulation curves
  • Statistics
  • Exported reports

Detection-Based Methods

For Detection Transect and Detection Point inventories:

  • Each detection is a separate record, not a single species entry.
  • After selecting a species, a form opens to fill:
  • Distance
  • Flight height
  • Flight direction
  • Group size

These inventories allow multiple entries of the same species.

Sorting the Species List

Tap the sort icon to choose how the list is ordered.
Sorting options may include:

  • Species (alphabetical)
  • Time added

Sorting helps during long surveys or when reviewing data.

Species Accumulation Chart

During or after an inventory, a species accumulation chart can be visualized to track species counts over time.

To view, tap the icon on the right side of the search bar.

If the inventory has a defined duration, a dashed line is displayed marking the end of the sampling period.

This tool helps evaluate sampling completeness and inventory performance.

Propagation to Active Inventories

When there are active inventories:

  • Adding a species to one active inventory automatically adds it to all other active inventories, except for Banding inventories.
  • Adding a species to an inactive inventory follows the species propagation option in Settings: always propagate, always ask, or never propagate.

This allows:

  • A qualitative list to run in parallel with point counts or transects
  • Automatic consolidation of species detected during the session

Automatic Feedback and Suggestions

When the species list is empty, the app may show action suggestions, such as:

  • Add species

These suggestions help guide new users.

The species/records list is designed to be fast, flexible, and field‑friendly, ensuring that your observations are captured accurately and efficiently during any type of survey.
